B Vitamins: The Energy Cofactors

B vitamins are essential cofactors in virtually every step of cellular energy production. They're required for your mitochondria to convert food into ATP — the energy currency your cells run on. Deficiency in any B vitamin can impair energy metabolism and produce fatigue.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

B12 deficiency is one of the most common causes of fatigue — and one of the most frequently missed. It's required for red blood cell production, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency produces fatigue, weakness, brain fog, and neurological symptoms.

Risk factors for B12 deficiency include: vegetarian/vegan diet, age over 50 (reduced stomach acid impairs absorption), use of metformin or proton pump inhibitors, and digestive conditions.

Note: Oral B12 supplementation is often inadequate for people with absorption issues. Sublingual or injectable B12 achieves much higher blood levels.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)

Thiamine is essential for converting carbohydrates into energy. Deficiency — more common than most people realize, particularly in people who consume alcohol or eat a diet high in refined carbohydrates — produces fatigue, weakness, and neurological symptoms.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin is a component of FAD and FMN — coenzymes essential for the electron transport chain (the final step of cellular energy production). Deficiency impairs mitochondrial function and energy production.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Niacin is a precursor to NAD+ — the master coenzyme of cellular energy metabolism. Adequate niacin intake supports NAD+ levels, which decline with age and are central to mitochondrial function.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

B5 is required for the synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA), which is essential for the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins for energy. It also supports adrenal function and cortisol production.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)

Vitamin D

Magnesium is also depleted by stress, alcohol, and certain medications (including diuretics and proton pump inhibitors).

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

CoQ10 is an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain — the process that produces the majority of your cellular energy. CoQ10 levels decline with age and are significantly depleted by statin medications (which block the same pathway that produces CoQ10).

Supplementation with CoQ10 (particularly the ubiquinol form, which is better absorbed) has been shown to improve energy levels, reduce fatigue, and improve exercise tolerance — particularly in people with CoQ10 depletion.

NAD+ Precursors (NMN, NR)
