Serotonin Production
Approximately 90% of your body's serotonin is produced in the gut — not the brain. Gut bacteria play a critical role in regulating this serotonin production. Dysbiosis can impair serotonin synthesis, contributing to depression and anxiety.
Inflammation and the Brain
Gut dysbiosis increases intestinal permeability ("leaky gut"), allowing bacterial products (particularly lipopolysaccharides, or LPS) to enter the bloodstream. GABA Production
Certain gut bacteria produce GABA — the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, which has calming, anti-anxiety effects. Reduced GABA-producing bacteria in the gut may contribute to anxiety.
Vagal Signaling

Optimizing Gut Health for Mental Wellness
Eat a Diverse, Plant-Rich Diet
Gut bacteria thrive on fiber — particularly the diverse fibers found in vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Dietary diversity is the single strongest predictor of microbiome diversity. Aim for 30+ different plant foods per week.
Include Fermented Foods
Fermented foods — yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh — contain live bacteria that support microbiome diversity. A Stanford study found that a diet high in fermented foods increased microbiome diversity and reduced inflammatory markers more effectively than a high-fiber diet alone.
Reduce Gut Irritants
Alcohol, NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin), artificial sweeteners, and ultra-processed foods disrupt the gut microbiome and increase intestinal permeability. Minimizing these supports gut barrier integrity.
