What Is Body Composition?
Body composition refers to the proportion of your body weight that is:

Two people can have identical BMIs and look completely different — one with high muscle mass and low fat, the other with low muscle and high fat. The person with more muscle is metabolically healthier, has a lower disease risk, and will age better — even if the scale shows the same number.
Why Muscle Mass Is a Longevity Marker
Research increasingly identifies muscle mass as one of the strongest predictors of long-term health outcomes. Here's why:
Metabolic Health
Muscle is the primary site of glucose disposal in the body. More muscle means more capacity to absorb and use blood sugar, dramatically improving insulin sensitivity. People with higher muscle mass have significantly lower rates of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease.
Resting Metabolic Rate
Muscle tissue is metabolically expensive — it burns approximately 6 calories per pound per day at rest. The Problem With Scale-Focused Weight Loss

- Cardio-only exercise — burns calories but doesn't build muscle; can even contribute to muscle loss when combined with caloric restriction

- Skinfold calipers — measures subcutaneous fat at multiple sites; accuracy depends heavily on technique
- Waist circumference — a simple proxy for visceral fat; waist >40 inches in men or >35 inches in women indicates elevated metabolic risk

Prioritize Resistance Training

Eat Enough Protein
Muscle protein synthesis requires adequate amino acid availability. Aim for 1.6–2.2 g/kg of body weight daily, distributed across 3–4 meals.
Don't Cut Calories Too Aggressively
A moderate deficit (300–500 calories) preserves more muscle than aggressive restriction. Faster weight loss is not better if it comes at the cost of lean mass.
Consider Hormone Optimization
Testosterone, growth hormone, and IGF-1 are the primary anabolic hormones that drive muscle maintenance and building. Optimizing these hormones — particularly in adults over 40 — can dramatically improve body composition outcomes.
Track the Right Metrics
Instead of (or in addition to) scale weight, track:
- Waist circumference
- Body fat percentage
